Life insurance after a milestone: where to start

Marriage, a new child, a mortgage or a growing business can change who depends on you. Start with purpose before comparing life insurance options.

Life insurance is often easier to discuss when you begin with the people and responsibilities in your life rather than a product name. Milestones can make those responsibilities clearer—and can be a good reason to revisit an older policy.

List who depends on you

Think about family members or others who rely on your income, caregiving, or help with ongoing expenses. A new child, spouse, or dependent relative may change the answer. If you own a business, consider whether anyone else depends on your role there.

Write down the purpose

Would you want coverage to help with housing costs, ongoing living expenses, education, or final expenses? Which needs have a specific time horizon, and which may last longer? Your answers can help frame a discussion about the amount and type of coverage.

Compare the types of policy

Term life is generally built around a specified period; whole life is designed as permanent coverage subject to policy terms. Premiums, features and suitability differ. Rather than assuming one is right for everyone, ask an agent to walk through choices available to you.

Check the details of what you already have

If you own a policy, locate its coverage amount, term or duration, and beneficiary information. An old beneficiary designation or a policy selected before a major life change is worth reviewing. Do not cancel existing coverage before understanding any replacement policy and its terms.

Make it a conversation

You do not need to arrive with a perfect number. Bring your priorities and questions to Merling Insurance Agency, and we'll discuss available options. Eligibility, premiums and policy features depend on underwriting and the insurer.
